Overview
Shopify MCP (npm package shopify-mcp, GitHub GeLi2001/shopify-mcp) is a community Model Context Protocol server that wraps Shopify's Admin GraphQL API for AI hosts such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and Cursor. It is aimed at merchants and developers who want conversational control over store operations — products, customers, orders, inventory, metafields, and tags — rather than Shopify's shopper-facing Storefront MCP.
The project documents Client Credentials for Dev Dashboard apps (including token refresh) and legacy static Admin API access tokens. Default API versioning is called out in the README ( fore.g. 2026-01 at the time of writing). It is not an official Shopify product; treat it as third-party open source.
Key Features
- Product CRUD: Create, update, and manage products, variants, and options through MCP tools.
- Customers & addresses: Customer lifecycle helpers including merge and address management.
- Orders & fulfillment: Lookup, cancel, close/open, mark paid, fulfillment, and refund-oriented tools.
- Metafields & tags: Get/set/delete metafields and add/remove tags on taggable resources.
- Inventory: Set absolute inventory quantities at locations.
- List ergonomics: Cursor pagination, sort keys, and pass-through Shopify query syntax on list endpoints.
How to Use
- Install an MCP-compatible host (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, etc.).
- Clone or install the server from https://github.com/GeLi2001/shopify-mcp and follow the README for build /
npx/ Docker commands. - Create API credentials for the underlying platform and put them in the MCP
envblock — never commit secrets. - Register the server in your client MCP config (Claude Desktop
claude_desktop_config.jsonor Cursormcp.json), then restart the client. - Start with read-only prompts; enable write tools only after you understand scopes and confirmation settings.
Pricing
The MCP server is open source. You still need a Shopify store and a custom app with appropriate Admin API scopes. Shopify subscription fees apply as usual; the MCP package itself is free to run locally via npx shopify-mcp or a global install.
| Plan | Billing | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| shopify-mcp (OSS) | — | Free | MIT-style community project; self-hosted |
| Shopify store + app | Shopify plans | Per Shopify | Admin API credentials required |
Best For
Shopify operators and agencies who want Claude/Cursor to manage Admin GraphQL tasks (catalog edits, order ops, metafield maintenance) during support or merchandising work. Prefer official Storefront MCP when the goal is customer-facing shopping chat.
FAQ
Official Shopify server?
No. This is the GeLi2001 community server. Shopify's first-party Storefront MCP docs live on shopify.dev.
Package name gotcha?
Use shopify-mcp (command shopify-mcp). The README warns against confusing it with differently named packages that expect other env vars.
Auth options?
Client ID + Client Secret (Dev Dashboard) or a legacy shpat_ Admin token, plus your *.myshopify.com domain.
How many tools?
The README advertises an expanded Admin tool set (30+ tools spanning products, customers, orders, metafields, inventory, and tags). Verify the current count in the repository.
