Glossary
What is Codex?
Codex is OpenAI’s agentic coding product — a sibling idea to Claude Code for building and operating software with an AI agent.
Codex refers to OpenAI’s agentic coding lineup (historically the Codex models, and more recently coding agents / IDE and cloud workflows branded around Codex). In practice, people mean an AI coding agent that can read a repo, edit files, run commands, and ship changes with you in the loop — similar in role to Claude Code.
How it relates to Skills and MCP
Like other agent hosts, Codex-style environments can:
- Follow project instructions and reusable Skills / playbooks
- Call external tools and data through MCP where supported
- Act as the AI agent that executes multi-step engineering or content-ops work
The exact product surface (CLI, IDE extension, cloud task runner) evolves; the useful mental model stays: agent host + repo context + tools.
